Soap Making: Simple Processing and making your components from scratch.  Dates TBD.

Many people have started to make the switch back to hand-crafted soaps because of the feel and smell of a real bar of soap with lovely botanicals and essential oils, as well as the ability to support local artisan’s endeavors. The home soap making process is much less energy intensive than the commercial method, as well as better for the environment.

Day One: Today we will teach you about the different components necessary to make soap like a pro. We will use a computer program to help us calculate the different lye levels required to create soap based on the oils that we have chosen. We will then manufacture soap, and leave it to cure overnight so that you can take it home to try it.

Day Two: We will get down to the basics of how to create potassium lye (KOH) for the purpose of making liquid soaps using ash from the fire. We will then go on to render tallow to create the fat to be saponified (the process of turning fat into soap). In the final part of the day, we will make a liquid soap using these materials.

Gardening for Beginners: How to grow Food using Permaculture principles– seed starting, building soil and harvesting plants, dates TBD

For those of you who have caught the organic bug, we often find that it is only a small step into wanting to know how to grow your own food. Once you taste the difference in quality from a commercial hothouse-grown tomato that is mostly water to an organic heirloom tomato, then imagine that same leap again from tasting a homegrown tomato right off the vine.

In this day-long course, you will be taught the fundamentals of gardening economically from the start. We will teach you how to start seeds indoors, direct sow seeds, transplant vegetables, grow soil from compost, build soil already in your beds as well as the best time to harvest some of your favorite vegetables.  (Ever wonder the trick to knowing when watermelons are done?) In the afternoon, we will also introduce some fundamentals of permaculture design in order to best design your garden in the space that you have.
