CLASS 2: Soap Making: Simple Processing and making your components from scratch. May 5th and 6th 10 to 5pm

Many people have started to make the switch back to hand-crafted soaps because of the feel and smell of a real bar of soap with lovely botanicals and essential oils, as well as the ability to support local artisan’s endeavors. The home soap making process is much less energy intensive than the commercial method, as well as better for the environment.

Day One: Today we will teach you about the different components necessary to make soap like a pro. We will use a computer program to help us calculate the different lye levels required to create soap based on the oils that we have chosen. We will then manufacture soap, and leave it to cure overnight so that you can take it home to try it.

Day Two: We will get down to the basics of how to create potassium lye (KOH) for the purpose of making liquid soaps using ash from the fire. We will then go on to render tallow to create the fat to be saponified (the process of turning fat into soap). In the final part of the day, we will make a liquid soap using these materials.

Please Bring:

An old towel that can be used to wrap around your soap to keep it warm.

Clothes for soap making – “dirtiable” long-sleeved clothes and closed-toed shoes to put on during the soap-making process.

Eye protection of some sort: goggles, glasses or sunglasses.

Something to hold your hair back with.

Included in the price:

A simple vegetarian meal for lunch, a bar of soap from the cold-processing day one. A bottle of liquid soap from the second day.  Learning a good skill.

There will be books about soap-making available for purchase as well as some materials.

Price: There is a maximum of 8 people for this workshop.

                One Day: $95

                Whole Workshop: $190
